Atkins celebrates the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge

29 October 2018

The strategically important Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge has officially opened. The world’s longest sea crossing will reduce freight and passenger travel time between the three cities to within an hour and play an important role in promoting the integration of the Greater Bay area. Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, is undertaking multiple contracts with contractors for the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and related projects. SNC-Lavalin acquired WS Atkins plc on July 3, 2017.

Douglas Simmons, Atkins’ Divisional Director for Highway & Transport Infrastructure business in Asia Pacific, said: “It’s always deeply rewarding to see major complex projects that our teams are involved in become operational and bring significant benefit to our society and to residents and visitors alike for generations to come.”

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and related projects in Hong Kong comprises the Main Bridge, Hong Kong Link Road, Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facility, Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and Tuen Mun Western Bypass. Atkins’ multidisciplinary team is involved in the following works:
Atkins was appointed by Gammon Construction Limited as design checker for the design and construction of the HKD8.7B Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link Southern Connection Viaduct Section.
Atkins was appointed by Dragages-Bouygues Joint Venture as independent checking engineer for the design and construction of the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link Northern Connection Sub-Sea Tunnel Section.
Atkins was appointed by China State Construction Engineering (Hong Kong) Limited as contractor’s designer for the design and construction of the HKD8.88B Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Link Road section between Scenic Hill on the Airport Island and the proposed Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, and roadlinks between the proposed Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities and the Hong Kong International Airport.
The Hong Kong Link Road was completed in October 2018, whilst the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link is expected to be completed in 2020.
