Atkins designs City of Dreams Mediterranean for Cyprus 24 September 2018 Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, the architect and engineer of the new City of Dreams Mediterranean integrated resort in Cyprus, is proud to announce that construction of the integrated casino resort started in June 2018. The development, led by Melco Group (Melco), will be the largest tourism development in Cyprus with an investment totaling €550 million. SNC-Lavalin acquired WS Atkins plc on July 3, 2017. The resort will present gaming areas consisting of 136 tables and 1, 200 gaming machines, a five-star hotel with luxurious villas and 500 hotel rooms with sea, mountain or dry lake views. It will host 11 Food & Beverage outlets, a wellness and sports centre, extensive indoor and outdoor pool areas, a high-end retail space and state-of-the-art convention facilities including an outdoor amphitheatre. Atkins has been appointed by Melco to provide one-stop-shop services to the project, including architecture, landscape design, structural engineering, mechanical and electrical engineering, interior design and sustainability design. Bertil de Kleynen, sector director for architecture, planning, landscape and interiors at SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins business in Asia Pacific, said: “We are honoured to be entrusted with the design of what is probably Europe’s largest integrated casino development. From our global team, we have drawn together an exemplary group of architects, engineers and designers to create a single seamless integrated team.” Alex Peaker, Atkins’ architecture design director, Hong Kong, said: “Our challenge was to bring the incredible facilities typically found in our client’s world-renowned integrated resort developments and apply them sensitively to this beautiful Mediterranean context. As a result, we believe guests will enjoy a relaxed intimate Mediterranean sense of scale, while still finding an array of facilities that would only be expected in Macau or Las Vegas.” Guest experience is further enhanced through the landscape design which was inspired by the native Cypriot landscape. Christian Dierckxsens, Atkins’ senior associate director for landscape, said: “We seek to offer guests an atmosphere resembling the charming old town area of Nicosia, the Republic’s largest city. Applying locally sourced materials and native plant species reflects the character of the place while contributing to landscape ecology. A large variety of landscape features provides natural zoning and reflects the wide range of guest facilities.” With an investment of €550 million, the resort is due to be completed in 2021, and is anticipated to attract 300, 000 tourists per year and create approximately 2, 500 permanent jobs. The financial impact of the project on Cyprus’ economy is expected to be approximately €700 million a year, equivalent to around 4% of the country’s annual GDP, after the second year of the integrated resort’s operation. Atkins leads the design role on a number of integrated casino resorts including a substantial new build development in the Philippines, as well as being involved in extensive remedial works on existing facilities for various clients across the south-east Asia region.
