Highlighting a spiritual symbol: the newly illuminated Abdülhamid Han Mosque

Istanbul, Turkey – Philips Lighting (Euronext Amsterdam ticker: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting announced today the illumination of the Abdülhamid Han Mosque in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey.

The Abdülhamid Han mosque is the fourth largest mosque in Turkey with a capacity to host up to 20, 000 people. Founded on four columns, the mosque is built on an area of 3, 600 square meters and has four minarets and 32 domes. The mosque was designed by architect Hacı Mehmet Güner and was built between 1993-2011.

The aim of the new illumination was to extend the mosque’s its daytime grandeur into nighttime, turning it into a symbol of the city, adorning its skyline.

“Every time I look at the mosque I experience different emotions. The new lighting highlights the architectural beauty of the building and turns it into a city symbol.” said Mustafa Aksel Abacıoğlu, Head of Department of Surveys and Projects at Kahramanmaraş Metropolitan Municipality

For the new illumination of the mosque, a mix of colored and warm white LED lighting is used. For the exterior, the columns of the mosque are illuminated with Philips Vaya Flood LP RGB luminaires, while warm white light is used in the back hall to accentuate wall illustrations.

The main dome is bathed in soft white light surrounded by smaller domes that are complemented with colored lighting. The minarets are illuminated with warm white Philips Vaya Flood LP G2, White & Mono LED luminaires giving prominence to the impressive building.

The ablution fountain in the courtyard of the mosque is illuminated with cool white lighting and colored lighting in the inner dome. Warm white light is also used at the entrance gate to the courtyard welcoming its visitors and at the same time highlighting its stunning architectural features.

Over the course of the evening the light can change by using different lighting scenarios creating a beautiful atmosphere at night.
