DETROIT-AREA HOMEOWNERS LEARN HOW TO VENT THEIR “DAM” PROBLEMS IN FIRST WEBISODES OF NEW ONLINE SERIES

Contractors show CertainTeed® Living Spaces® Facebook® Home Makeover Contest winner how the right exterior building products can prevent drafts and ice dams and increase curb appeal

MALVERN, PA,

JANUARY 23, 2017

(Malvern, Pa.) – The latest CertainTeed® Living Spaces® online series has premiered, with sights set on a Metro Detroit family seeking a more vibrant and weather-resistant home exterior. Ann and Lee Bird of Farmington Hills, Michigan, winners of CertainTeed Living Spaces’ $100, 000 Facebook® Home Makeover Contest, wanted to repair the many ravages of time on their 1940s-era home and make a lasting improvement to the home’s curb appeal. Clad in off-white siding with a roof that had faded from black to gray over time and surrounded by deteriorating wood fences, the home was in serious need of an update.

“We definitely want to make our house ‘pop more’, ” said Ann Bird. “We like the character of it, but the siding is drab.”

In the first webisode, Ann and Lee discuss their home exterior overhaul ideas with Bob Wilk, owner of Indoor-Outdoor Remodeling, LLC, of Livonia Michigan. During a walk around of the home, Wilk offers CertainTeed siding product solutions that meet the family’s aesthetic and performance needs. For instance, he suggests durable Monogram® vinyl siding for its painted wood lap siding look and heavy shadow lines and Cedar Impressions® to accent the home’s dormer with the classic profile of cedar shake siding. In addition, the trio discussed one of the home’s biggest problems—ice damming.

“We’ve got this spectacular ice dam on the side of the house, next to the garage and in the back, ” Lee Bird said. “In the winter time, we get blasted by the sun in the morning, and any snow that gets built up tends to melt, drip and freeze on the ground.”

To help combat this winter woe, Wilk suggests installing InvisiVent™ vinyl soffit beneath the roof overhangs. Using InvisiVent in combination with proper attic insulation and a CertainTeed Integrity Roof System® provides excellent weather resistance and permits the venting of warm interior air that contributes to ice dam formation during the winter season. Wilks also gave recommendations for exterior remodels to the home and garage that would improve the visual flow and make entrances more striking.

In the second webisode, roofing expert Chad Treutler of Victors Roofing in Canton, Michigan, discusses the home’s ice dam problem in greater depth. He talks about the importance of attic ventilation and how the different components of the Integrity Roof System – including CertainTeed Ridge Vent and WinterGuard® waterproofing underlayment – help protect the roof from water damage and prevent ice dam formation. Treutler also talks about how the Landmark® PRO shingles and matching hip and ridge accessory shingles will provide beauty and a robust defense against wind and storms throughout the year.

How to perfectly frame the home’s outdoor living spaces takes center stage in the third webisode, showcasing a consultation by Paul Loshaw of Kimberly Fence, located in Warren, Michigan. The Birds discuss their desire for different types of fence styles and colors to enhance the security, functionality and curb appeal of their yard. For the front yard, Loshaw recommends a traditional Bufftech®vinyl white picket fence that can be personalized with a choice of different finials and post caps.

To address the couple’s interest in a high quality, weathered gray cedar privacy fence — but without the maintenance that comes with real wood — CertaGrain® vinyl fence in Arctic Blend color is suggested, with matching gates to seamlessly blend with the entire length of the yard; and also beautifully complement the siding colors being considered for the home’s exterior. The Birds are also given piece of mind, as they learn that all Bufftech gates are made with an interior sub frame that includes heavy-duty aluminum supports for extra strength and longevity — even with heavy daily use.

Webisodes are available for viewing at the CertainTeed Living Spaces YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/CTLivingSpaces). Participants in the CertainTeed Living Spaces Home Makeover contest were required to submit a fun, creative 90-second video to demonstrate why their home should win. The Birds’ winning video – “Rappin’ For a Redo” – features the family performing an acoustic ballad-turned rap that describes the siding, insulation, roofing and decking needs of their aging home.
