Skanska builds new Sixth Street Viaduct in Los Angeles, USA, for USD 134 M, about SEK 1.2 billion

Press release 1/16/2017 8:30 AM CET

Skanska has, in a joint venture with Stacy and Witbeck, signed a contract with the City of Los Angeles to construct the new Sixth Street Viaduct in Los Angeles, USA. The total contract is worth USD 191M. Skanska USA Civil will include its share of the contract worth USD 134M, about SEK 1.2 billion, in the order bookings for the first quarter 2017.

The new structure will be a Los Angeles landmark. The design of the bridge, known as “The Ribbon of Light, ” was created by Los Angeles-based architect Michael Maltzan. The original bridge, built in 1932, spanned about 1, 000 meters across the river and was used to represent Los Angeles in countless movies, music videos and TV. Yet, due to a rare chemical reaction in the cement supports and seismic vulnerability, the Sixth Street Viaduct needed to be demolished and replaced.

The joint venture team previously demolished the former structure under a separate contract. It was also awarded the contract for the new bridge’s foundations last August and that portion of the viaduct construction is well under way. The new viaduct will be opened to traffic in 2020.

Skanska USA is one of the leading development and construction companies in the country, consisting of four business units: Skanska USA Building, which specializes in building construction; Skanska USA Civil, specialized in civil infrastructure; Skanska Infrastructure Development, which develops public-private partnerships; and Skanska USA Commercial Development, which develops commercial projects in select U.S. markets. Headquartered in New York, Skanska USA has more than 10, 000 employees and its 2015 revenues were SEK 54.5 billion.
