NCC to build retirement home in Västerås

NCC and the City of Västerås are to jointly build a retirement home with 90 apartments and common areas at Öster Mälarstrand in Västerås, Sweden. The order is worth SEK 260 million.

The assignment is a turnkey contract in partnering form where NCC will construct a retirement home in response to the growing proportion of elderly people in the municipality. The home will contain 90 apartments and common areas and be designed to be pleasant and facilitate a lifestyle that is as independent as possible for the residents.

"This project has a particular focus on technology. For example, all residents will be provided with toilet seats and sinks of variable height and a fall detection system will be installed that can detect if a resident has fallen in his or her room. This will also contribute to a good work environment for personnel, " says Anders Lindkvist, Business Manager of NCC Building Sweden.

The building will have seven stories. The ground floor will include a café, office and kitchen. The top floor will house a rooftop terrace, conservatory, relaxation area, sauna and fan room. The basement contains storage space and changing rooms for staff along with services areas and storage space for recycling. The entire project will be built to meet a Silver environmental rating from the Sweden Green Building Council.

Preparatory civil engineering work has commenced and the home is scheduled to be completed in spring 2021.
