SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins project receives two Project of the Year awards

Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, received two awards for the Barbours Cut Dock 8 & San Jacinto Battleground Marsh Restoration project. The awards, the Environmental Port Project of the Year and the Inland Dredging Project of the Year: Majors, were presented at the 2018 Dredging and Port Construction Awards event held November 20, 2018 in Amsterdam.

SNC-Lavalin's Atkins business was the dredging engineer of record for the Barbours Cut Dock 8 & San Jacinto Battleground Marsh Restoration Project. The team designed the project within an accelerated schedule of 20 months, transporting 475,000 cubic yards of dredged material nearly 10 miles from Barbours Cut to San Jacinto Marsh in Texas. The dredge fill helped restore 150 acres of intertidal marsh habitat to its historically-accurate condition, creating an environment that promotes growth of native marsh grasses and withstands varying water elevations and salinity levels.

"Focused on sustainability, we found a beneficial use for dredge material and restored a crucial habitat at a historic Texas marsh, " said Mark Stroik, Program Manager, SNC-Lavalin's Atkins business. "To receive two awards and recognition for this effort from the world's best in this area is a true honor."

Dredging and Port Construction Magazine hosts the annual awards event to promote innovation, efficiency and sustainability while highlighting creativity, problem-solving skills and cutting-edge technology. The awards banquet held in Amsterdam, Netherlands concluded the Central Dredging Association (CEDA)-Europe/International Association of Dredging Companies (IADC) Dredging for Sustainable Infrastructure Conference. This year's conference marked 50 years of the magazine and 40 years of CEDA.

The project was also awarded the 2017 Environmental Excellence Award for Navigation Dredging by the Western Dredging Association which covers the North, Central and South America regions.
