The advent of digital engineering – a year in review

Uwe Krueger, Atkins' chief executive officer, said: "The world is changing rapidly and so are the demands on our industry. Digital disruptors are transforming the way infrastructure is developed and maintained and this trend must be accelerated if we are to meet the needs of a world that continues to evolve at pace. This year Atkins has put new technology at the heart of the projects we are working on and this has enabled us to help clients create smarter, more resilient, infrastructure.

"But this is only the beginning. Looking forward to 2017, we will continue to embrace the advent of digital engineering to ensure we make our cities better places to live and work for the future."

A review of our key projects and company highlights over the last year that show how we're helping to transform our ever-changing world and enriching lives:

World Economic Forum on ASEAN
Atkins' CEO Prof Dr Uwe Krueger spoke at the World Economic Forum on ASEAN about how regional infrastructure companies can work together to build a sustainable investment climate for the future.

Cranfield University honours Atkins' chairman with doctorate
Our chairman Allan Cook received an honorary doctorate from Cranfield University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the defence and security industry. In his keynote address, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Jones praised Allan Cook as "an engineer's engineer".

Intelligent Mobility
We called on the government to take a collaborative approach to transport design and delivery that will address the urban issues of traffic congestion, air pollution and overcrowded transport networks.

Atkins Fellows

Our design for a new public library in Nabta Town in Egypt encourages the user to ponder, innovate and explore. It forms part of the smart and sustainable urban real estate Nabta Town masterplan.

Dubai Opera
The award winning Dubai Opera celebrates the city's heritage and traditions; its design was inspired by the traditional Arabic dhow, a shipping trade vessel that brought prosperity to the region. A key consideration was its impact on the surrounding neighbourhood, and how the project could offer multicultural opportunities for Dubai's residents and visitors.

Energy

ETI Salt Caverns Study
In partnership with the Energy Technology Institute, we're working to identify salt caverns suitable for storing hydrogen and gas - a whole city's energy demand can be catered for by energy stored in one salt cavern.

Dounreay Tri floating wind demonstration project
We've partnered with Hexicon to create the world-first floating wind project. Together we're pushing the boundaries of design to help provide clean energy for all.
