"Integrating intermittent renewables and meeting new demand loads requires a more flexible, reliable interconnected and intelligent grid" said Claudio Facchin, President of ABB's Power Grids division. "And key to managing this transformation, is the increasing digitalization of the power value chain, enabling us to leverage the internet of things, services and people – a key element of ABB's Next Level strategy".

Claudio Facchin will be delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of Cigre 2016 on August 21, presenting the evolution of the power sector and related technology trends.

As part of its showcase, ABB will demonstrate its digital substation concept, highlighting key features like safety, flexibility and availability, while reducing cost, risk and environmental impact. The concept will also include Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) with integrated information and communication technologies, enabling monitoring and diagnostics, as well as data and asset management.

ABB's digital substation exhibit at Cigré includes disconnecting circuit breakers (DCB) with Fiber Optic Current Sensors (FOCS), hybrid high-voltage switchgear with a digitally compatible motor drive, sensing and monitoring devices for transformers, Relion protection and control IEDs, the FOX family of communications devices, MicroSCADA Pro monitoring system and Asset Health Center.

Another focus area is high-voltage power transmission, where ABB will highlight its MACH control and protection technology for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and Flexible Alternating Current Systems (FACTS), which acts as the 'brain' of these systems using state-of-the-art computers, microcontrollers and digital signal processors. ABB will also premiere a new compact concept for offshore wind connections based on a modular design with considerable size and weight savings.

Also presented at the event will be the EssPro Grid battery energy storage system (BESS) which stores and dispatches electrical energy when needed, enabling a more flexible and responsive energy infrastructure. The ABB stand will also include technologies for wireless communication networks and microgrid solutions.

As part of its composite service offering ABB will display sensor and software based solutions to facilitate the integration of operational and information technologies and enable asset health management, in line with the company's Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP) approach. Power quality and consulting services will also be featured at the ABB pavilion.
