Ramboll designs new container port in Nuuk, Greenland

Drawing upon a wide array of skills, Ramboll has been contracted with designing a new container port of 60,000 square metres in Nuuk, Greenland. The port will be built by the Danish contractor Per Aarsleff A/S.

Over the next five months, a project team of Ramboll employees representing various engineering disciplines will design the new container port. It is a so-called greenfield project with no previous land or sea infrastructure, which makes the project quite complex.

Multi-faceted port project
This calls for power cabling and connection, 360 metres of quayside, dredging of the port basin, construction of 4,700 square metres of port facilities – as well as the removal of 300,000 cubic metres of mountainside to make way for a suitable construction site.

- We have set up a dedicated 20-man project team consisting of engineers with expert knowledge of port design, heavy duty pavements, utilities, as well as professionals with local insight and stakeholder access from our Nuuk office, says Morten Thorhauge Boolsen, Head of Department, Ports and Geo Structures at Ramboll.

Cross-disciplinary collaboration
A vital success factor for the project is to build coherence in the way different parts of the port design project are carried out. Ramboll has found a workflow that accommodates this success factor.

- The entire team is physically located in the same office for the duration of the design project to ensure ideal knowledge sharing and cross-disciplinary collaboration. To optimise our collaboration with the contractor, the design manager from Per Aarsleff A/S will also be part-time at the project office. With so many disciplines involved in one project, it's essential that we play off each other's strengths, Morten Thorhauge Boolsen concludes.

The container port in Nuuk is the first major international port design project after the establishment of Ramboll's global port sector in early 2015.
