Strabag extends container port in Mauritius

Strabag, the internationally active technology group for construction services, is extending and strengthening the container harbour at Port Louis, Mauritius, together with its partner Archirodon Construction (Overseas) Co. SA. The project has a volume of about € 90 million (USD 115 million), of which Strabag holds 50 %, and is to be completed in slightly over two years.

The project is being carried out in four phases to allow the harbour to remain in operation while work is going on. Phase 1, with a length of 244 m, includes the new berthing quay to be founded into the sea bed on tubular steel piles and sheet piles (combi-wall), the corresponding concrete works, the quay facilities, and the relocation of three container cranes. Also forming part of this phase are the extension of the container storage area and the construction of annex buildings. This phase is to be completed by mid-2015.

Phases 2–4 involve the modernisation of 560 m of existing harbour facilities. These works should be completed in December 2016.

The island nation of Mauritius, with a population of 1.2 million, is situated in the Indian Ocean about 3,000 km east of the coast of African.
