Iconic Solar Facility built by Bechtel Receives Industry Honor

The Bechtel-built Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System has been awarded POWER magazine's 2014 Plant of the Year award. Located in Southern California's Mojave Desert, Ivanpah is one of the world's largest solar thermal facilities and the first renewable plant to receive this top honor. POWER magazine's Plant of the Year Award is presented to projects that lead the industry in the successful deployment of advanced technology while minimizing environmental impact. The project was a joint effort among Bechtel, NRG, Google, and BrightSource Energy.

The 377-megawatt facility utilizes 173,500 heliostats to concentrate sunlight onto three 450-foot high power towers. At full capacity, the plant produces enough clean, renewable electricity to power 140,000 homes. Ivanpah reached commercial operation in December 2013 and celebrated its grand opening with industry leaders and dignitaries, including the U.S. Secretary of Energy in February.
