The cranes dance in the construction site of Salini Impregilo in Athens

"A way to celebrate the energy of a people who express themselves through music, knowledge and beauty." With these words, Renzo Piano described the event in Athens at the construction site of the cultural centre, designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop international architectural practice and built by Salini Impregilo S.p.A. and Terna (Greece) for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center.

Pietro Salini and Renzo Piano were present at the event hosted by Andreas Dracopoulos Co-President of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation attended by a variety of internationally-renowned personalities and representatives from the world of Greek culture in order to celebrate a truly unique event: the first major artistic performance of the "Dance of the Cranes, " performed to the notes of Gustav Holst's "The Planets", conducted by Myron Michailidis, Director of the Greek National Opera (GNO).

The new Cultural Center boasts architecture that showcases energy efficiency, and aims to become the Greek capital's new civic and social epicentre.

Situated roughly 4.5 km from downtown Athens, the project includes the construction of a multifunctional, ecologically sustainable centre, developed over a total area of 232,000 m2. The project's green element was born of a decision to dedicate 85% of the surface area to creating a roughly 170,000 m2 hilly park: the Stavros Niarchos Park. The project includes two new avant-garde structures: a 24,000 m2 National Library that can host up to 750,000 books; and the 33,000 m2 Greek National Opera, which includes both a 1,400-seat main theatre and a 400-seat experimental theatre.
