Bella Sky honoured with international award

Ramboll has just received the international construction award 'FIB Award' for the company's technical consulting and construction concept for the Danish hotel Bella Sky Comwell Hotel. With this award, the iconic hotel joins the Spreckelsen triumphal arch, 'La Grande Arche' in Paris and the 'Turning Torso' in Malmo, which have previously won of the award.

Over a very short period of time, the Bella Sky Comwell Hotel has achieved recognition as an iconic building, receiving considerable international attention, and serving as a striking landmark for the 'Orestad' district in Copenhagen. Now, the hotel can add yet another success to the list, as one of three buildings in the world to be honoured with the international 'FIB Award', which is presented once every four years to concrete structures characterised by international excellence.

As a structure, Bella Sky distinguishes itself by defying gravity. Amazingly, the most significant part of the hotel building consists of two towers, leaning in opposite directions, at an angle which is almost four times that of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This means that the project is an almost impossible feat of architecture:

"We have contributed to the creation of a building which has great architectural and user-oriented ambitions, but on paper, this kind of structure is hardly feasible, and it has required a special effort in every way. We are truly proud of the fact that we, in collaboration with the architects from 3XN, have succeeded in bringing the vision behind Bella Sky Comwell to life, and to receive international recognition in the form of the FIB Award. This is the ultimate honour you can achieve when working with concrete structures, " says Kaare K. B. Dahl, Senior Project Manager at Ramboll, in charge of Ramboll's advisory team on the Bella Sky Comwell project.

FIB stands for Fédération Internationale Du Béton/The International Federation for Structural Concrete. It is a non-profit organisation with more than 1, 000 members in 42 countries that works for the technical, economic, aesthetic and environmental development of concrete structures all over the world.

Kaare K. B. Dahl received the award on Monday at a huge conference, organised by FIB, which is currently taking place in Mumbai, India.

In prestigious company

With the FIB award, the Bella Sky Comwell joins prestigious company. Former winners of the construction award are among others, the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark, the Turning Torso in Malmo and the Spreckelsen triumphal arch, 'La Grande Arche' in Paris.

"It is not an art to dream, but it can certainly be an art to bring dreams to life. Nevertheless, that is what those working on the Bella Sky Comwell have succeeded in doing, and we are very proud that the building has now received international recognition for the technical competence shown, " says Anders Duelund, Hotel Manager of the Bella Sky Comwell.

With its 23 floors, 812 designer rooms and 28 meeting and conference rooms, Bella Sky Comwell is Scandinavia's largest hotel.
