Atkins-designed M62 Managed Motorway scheme goes live

The M62 Managed Motorway scheme – an Atkins-designed project has been delivered two months early and under budget. The 15 mile scheme, between Junctions 25 and 30, aims to reduce congestion and provide safer, more reliable journeys by managing traffic flow during peak periods by opening the hard shoulder to traffic.

Alan Dalley, Atkins' senior project manager for the scheme, said: "The opening of the M62 Managed Motorways scheme is not only significant for road users in West Yorkshire, but also demonstrates how it is possible to achieve the Governments 20 per cent efficiency savings. This target was surpassed by radically altering the design through challenging the standards which governed the main cost items of the scheme."

Atkins' key achievements:

24 per cent efficiency saving realised from the original SoS estimate of £198 million to the Scheme Target Cost estimate of £150.6 million due to innovation savings and risk management
Further £12 million saving during construction with outturn cost reduced to £138 million, excluding gain shares, due to collaborative working by team and additional innovation savings
Invaluable use of the interactive 3D model to gain buy-in to the scheme from stakeholders and therefore speed up the governance process
Scheme opened to traffic two months early in September 2013 due to efficiencies delivered in the commissioning process
Scheme delivered more than two years earlier than other SR10 schemes who originally were to be completed sooner, due to a can do attitude to resolve issues and move the project forward
First significant section of All Lane Running to be opened on the network.
