Leighton Contractors agrees Perth airport deal details

Leighton Contractors Pty Limited, as part of the Gateway WA Alliance, has reached agreement with Main Roads WA on the price, scope and construction methodology for the $1 billion Gateway WA Perth Airport and Freight Access Project. The Contract Cost Target agreed with Main Roads is valued at $899 million of which Leighton Contractors has a 68% share.

The Gateway WA Alliance includes Leighton Contractors and partners Georgiou, GHD, AECOM and BG&E. It was awarded the Perth Airport and Freight Access Project by competitive tender in November 2012.

The Gateway WA project will improve the road network around Perth Airport and the nearby Kewdale and Forrestfield industrial estates. Features include extra lanes on Tonkin Highway, new interchanges and the upgrade of Leach Highway to an expressway.

Construction will be staged to minimise impacts to road users and the local community and opened progressively to deliver earliest benefits. Project completion is scheduled for early 2017, ahead of the planned expansion and consolidation of the Perth airport terminals.

To date the Gateway WA Alliance has focused on detailed pricing, planning, design and early works packages. These include the Abernethy Road-Tonkin Highway on-ramp which will be completed in September 2013 and the realignment of the Gerry Archer Reserve which will be completed in late 2013, to accommodate the Leach Highway/Abernethy Road intersection.

Leighton Contractors has previously led alliances for Main Roads WA, successfully delivering the New Perth Bunbury Highway, Mandurah Entrance Road Project and the Great Eastern Highway Upgrade in Belmont. Other road projects delivered by Leighton Contractors include the award winning Gateway Bridge upgrade in Queensland, the M80 Upgrade project in Victoria and the Ballina Bypass in NSW.

Gateway WA is jointly funded by the Federal ($686 million) and the Western Australian State ($318 million) governments.
