State Of The Nation - Danish Infrastructure Improvement

The 'State of the Nation' report just published by The Danish Association of Consulting Engineers (FRI), shows that the condition of Danish infrastructure has improved over the last four years. However, sewers, public buildings and public highways still lag behind significantly as public investment spending falls. Ramboll has prepared the report for FRI, which gives an overview of the state of Denmark's current infrastructure.

The infrastructure analysed in the report includes rail, ports, roads and bridges, sewers and waste water, water supply, waste, and energy - representing societal values equivalent to EUR 280 to 400 billion.

The report states that heavy investment in the rail network during recent years is making a positive contribution to improving Danish infrastructure. This area therefore achieved a higher score on the 'State of the Nations' scale – moving up from 2.5 to 3.5 on a 5 point scale. With further improvements planned on the rail network, this positive trend is likely to continue.

The report also highlights that there are areas where there is still room for some improvements if Danish society wants to future-proof key parts of its infrastructure - particularly at a local authority level. Calculations in the report demonstrate that if the Danish sewerage system is to be safeguarded against cloudburst events, like the ones seen in Copenhagen last year and in Svendborg and Aarhus this year, it requires investment to the order of EUR 2.7 to 7.4 billion.
