Ferrovial Services to build a waste treatment plant in the UK

AmeyCespa, a 50:50 joint venture of Ferrovial Services subsidiaries Amey and Cespa, has been selected by the council of Milton Keynes (a city of 200,000 people, northwest of London) to design, build and operate a new waste treatment plant. AmeyCespa will manage the facility for 15 years once it becomes operational, which is expected in 2016.

During the life cycle of the plant, its advanced technology will allow for a 95% reduction in landfill use, an increase in recycling, and GBP50 million in savings in waste management costs by the local authorities. The energy-from-waste plant will produce enough electricity to supply 11,000 households.

The facility will deal with household "black sack" waste, the rubbish that's left over after recycling, as well as waste from local companies and businesses. The plant will combine three treatment technologies: mechanical, anaerobic (decomposition of organic matter using micro-organisms) and thermal, which will transform each type of waste into a recyclable product, compost or energy.
