First green roof in Southwest Charlotte

New Forum has announced the completion of the first green roof in Ayrsley located at The Lofts at Charleston Row, USA. The Lofts, a 98-unit apartment and retail complex, recently finished the first phase of what will ultimately be 230 apartments and 8,902 square feet of retail space in Ayrsley. Driven by Southwest Charlotte's thriving job market, the first phase of The Lofts broke ground in November 2011 and is currently leasing. The project has added much needed housing in Mecklenburg County's second largest employment district and the green roof can be found atop the building's courtyard pavilion.

A green roof is a rooftop that is constructed to support the installation and growth of plants. Green roofs typically last longer than conventional roofs and are much more visually appealing, especially to the residents whose apartments will overlook the structure. On a wide scale, green roofs improve air quality and reduce the urban heat island effect, a condition in which urban development's trap heat. The Green Roof at Charleston Row's courtyard pavilion is the first of its kind in the area.

Charles Hodges, New Forum's CEO stated that: "we really like the idea of a green roof. The environmental benefits are important, but we wanted to learn about the cost to build it and what is involved in maintaining it. We like what we've learned so far; it cost less than we expected and there haven't been any maintenance headaches. It also has created a real buzz within our community."

New Forum called upon Providence Landscape and Overcash & Demmitt to design the pavilion at The Lofts at Charleston Row. Concorde Construction was the general contractor on the project.
