Pöyry working on several World Design Capital 2012 projects

The World Design Capital is an initiative of Icsid, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, which every second year recognizes one global city for its accomplishments in utilizing design as a tool to improve social, cultural, and economic life. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, has been selected World Design Capital 2012. Pöyry's experts participate e.g. in the following WDC2012 projects.

Architects and structural engineers design a lighted artwork in Kruunuvuori, Helsinki

Close to Helsinki downtown, right by the sea shore, there is an old oil silo that will be transformed into a piece of environmental art, with over a thousand white LED lights making light patterns its surface. The Silo will become a public space catering for different purposes, and a part of the Kruunuvuori district that will be built in the 2010s and 2020ies. The illuminated work of art will be opened in the autumn. Pöyry is responsible for the structural and architectural design of the Silo.

Good Urban Design – Better City Life exhibition

City Planning Department's exhibition centre Laituri is hosting an exhibition on the urban design from May to June. Landscape designers of Pöyry have participated in composing the exhibition. The exhibition includes three projects where our designers have been widely involved in: Finnoo turnaround and Kuitinmäki surroundings in Espoo, Siltakatu surroundings in the centre of Espoo and Inkeri square in Imatra, Eastern Finland.

Architectural competition for the new central library of Helsinki: high-quality, eco-efficient and timeless building

The new Central Library of Helsinki will be much more than a traditional library. It will be a dynamic entity comprised of the physical spaces, technology, library collections, staff, cooperation partners and clients. It will be located in the heart of Helsinki, the Töölönlahti ["Töölö Bay"] area and is due to open in 2017

The City of Helsinki is arranging an international architectural competition for the design of the library. Pöyry supports the city in organizing it. Our team has been preparing the competition and will also have an expert role in the evaluation phase. Furthermore, our structural engineers have been involved in the project design phase.

Architectural competition for the Kruunusillat bridges in the heart of Helsinki

Kruunusillat bridges will connect the Helsinki city centre and a new island district of Kruunuvuorenranta. Supported by Pöyry, the City of Helsinki is organising an international design competition for Kruunusillat (Crown Bridges). The purpose of the competition is to find a high-quality solution for an environment extremely demanding from the landscape and cultural-historical perspectives. The Kruunusillat bridges shall have a positive effect on Helsinki's image and shall be a worthy legacy for future.

Sponsoring the European Architectural Student Assembly

Pöyry sponsored the Wastelands assembly gathering together 500 architectural students around Europe into Helsinki. The assembly takes place 16 to 29 June and it concentrates on investigating and interpreting the theme of Wastelands ­– on the potential of these spaces "in between". A two-week festival consists of workshops, lectures, social interaction and monumental experiences, providing framework for international networking. The city has been an urban laboratory of these young architects and artists.
