GaLaBau trade fair continues to expand

Even larger, even more attractive – this is how GaLaBau, Europe's leading trade fair for the development and design of gardens, landscapes, sports fields, and playgrounds, is presenting itself in its anniversary year. GaLaBau will take place for the 20th time already from 12 to 15 September 2012. The two subsidiary exhibitions, the PLAYGROUND and Deutsche Golfplatztage (German Golf Course Days) expert sections, have also been prettified and will offer new programme points. More than 1,100 exhibitors and 60,000 specialist visitors are expected to attend the triplet fairs GaLaBau, PLAYGROUND and Deutsche Golfplatztage.

The complete product range for the design, construction and maintenance of gardens, parks and green spaces will be exhibited in twelve halls. Around 50 per cent of exhibitors will present construction and maintenance machinery, about 30 per cent will offer building materials, and the remaining 20 per cent will cover special products like playground equipment, street furniture, or the golf course construction and maintenance segment.

The specialist visitors will mainly comprise landscape gardeners (around 50 percent), clients from cities and municipalities (around 20 per cent), landscape architects (around 10 per cent), as well as representatives from the domestic housing market, schools, green-keepers, golf course managers and operators, campsite operators, and construction companies.

The earthworks and maintenance demonstration areas, where construction and maintenance machinery can be seen live in action outside, have been merged this year. This means that the areas available for live demonstrations with excavators, mowers etc. are even larger. The advantage visitors have from the joining is that they only have to walk one way to see two demonstration areas. Those are located at the Silbersee in Volkspark Dutzendteich, directly adjacent to the fair ground. They can be reached easily via the continuously operating shuttle bus or on foot within a few minutes from the exhibition halls.

The GaLaBau will be even more interesting for landscape architects due to the bdla Construction Seminar, which will take place for the first time on Thursday, 13 September 2012, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Federation of German Landscape Architects (Bund deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten, bdla) invites landscape architects and graduate engineers from private planning offices and public administrations to this one-day seminar. Experienced practitioners will talk about current topics of building law, construction technology and construction management related to space planning.

When the special show "tree care and tree climbing" premiered at GaLaBau in 2010, it was a major visitor attraction right from the start. This year it will take place again, supported by additional partners. Besides the Munich-based tree-climbing equipper Freeworker and NürnbergMesse, the cooperation partners of the special show include Baumzeitung with its climbers' magazine from the renowned publishing house Haymarket, and the German section of ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). Experts will deliver presentations on the subjects of tree care and tree climbing at the special show. In addition there will be climbing shows at a rig in the exhibition hall.

For GaLaBau hall 1 of the exhibition centre will turn into a gigantic playground. Seesaws, climbing frames, swings, suspension bridges—this and much more will be shown there. Around 100 manufacturers of playground equipment and leisure facilities will show their products and innovations, in which especially planners and clients in cities and municipalities are interested.

The new PLAYGROUND Forum, organised by the Federal Association of Playground Equipment and Leisure Facilities Manufacturers (Bundesverband für Spielplatzgeräte und Freizeitanlagen Hersteller, BSFH) in cooperation with the specialist journal Playground@Landscape, will focus on the topic of playground safety.

For the first time this year the Bavarian State Association of the Camping Industry (Landesverband der Campingwirtschaft in Bayern, LCB) will cooperate with GaLaBau. At the trade fair camping companies will find interesting information on products and services for the development and maintenance of campsites and parking spaces for camper vans. Additionally the LCB will organise two specialist presentations covering the topics "Environmental Education and Nature Discoveries" and "Tourism and Biodiversity". The presentations will be delivered at the PLAYGROUND Forum.

For the third time already the expert section Deutsche Golfplatztage (German Golf Course Days) will take place during GaLaBau. About 100 exhibitors will show a comprehensive product range for the design, maintenance and management of golf courses at their stands.

The DGV will host a seminar in cooperation with BGL on Wednesday, 12 September, addressing both green-keepers and landscape gardeners. The seminar will deal with the current priority topic "Integrated Plant Protection on Lawn Areas". Moreover the Golf Congress will take place on 13 and 14 September in NCC Ost. The programme includes important current topics for golf course managers and operators. The beginning of the Golf Congress will be marked by the Golf Business Cup, held on 12 September 2012 at Golfclub Lichtenau.

In addition to the comprehensive product range presented by the exhibitors in the halls, GaLaBau offers an extensive and attractive supporting programme for landscape gardeners, centrally organised by the BGL.
The titles of this year’s BGL specialist conferences are:

“From Building to Open Space – Practical Knowledge: Professional Facade Connection”
(13 September)

“Living Walls: Vertical Gardens – The Green Future”
(13 September)

“Healthy Urban Development Needs Real Green”
(14 September)

“Benefit from the Change: Practical Steps to More Success”
(14 September).

In the course of the GaLaBau opening on Wednesday, 12 September 2012 at 10 a.m. the ELCA’s International Award for “Ecological Construction & Landscaping” will be presented once again this year. Together, ELCA (European Landscape Contractors Association) and BGL wish to promote interdisciplinary cooperation between building contractors, landscape architects and landscape gardeners by presenting this award.

The Landscape Gardeners’ Cup, taking place on the first two trade fair days, is particularly popular among the visitors. Once more this year, the best young professionals from the individual German Länder in the field of landscape gardening will participate in this federal professional competition to prove their skills. The aim is to find the German champions, who will then participate in the World Championship.

New and ground-breaking products and procedures for the design and maintenance of landscaped areas will be presented the GaLaBau Innovation Medal. The award is today considered a seal of quality in the industry. All GaLaBau exhibitors offering a new product or a significant development are invited to participate.
