Turner is an early adopter of modular concrete stairwells

The Turner team at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center is approaching the Ladders Last policy in a new way – by assembling modular, concrete staircases developed by Miller-Valentine. The 60,000-square-foot outpatient center will have twoMod-u-Con stairwells, each of which will take two days to erect.

Turner Vice President and Director of Environmental Health & Safety, Cindy DePrater said, “Turner is committed to creating the safest workplace possible for all workers on all projects. The introduction of this precast modular stair system, which provides safe, covered access and egress to all workers, is just another example of Turner's Ladders Last Policy being proactively implemented. It demonstrates once again how serious Turner Construction Company is about worker safety.”

The pre-cast, modular units, which can be manufactured on-site of 100% recycled materials, are stacked like enormous building blocks to make protected, complete stairwells before elevated floors are built. Eliminating temporary stairs, ladders and scaffolding at this stage in the construction process not only reduces the potential for accidents, but can improve productivity.
