Strabag awarded billion-euro Pedemontana Lombarda motorway in Italy

Autostrada Pedemontana S.p.A. definitely awarded the contract for Lots B1, B2, C and D of the Pedemontana Lombarda motorway in northern Italy to a consortium led by European construction group Strabag. Work on the € 1.7 billion order will begin in the course of 2012 in order to hand over the motorway in time for the Milan Universal Exposition in 2015.

The order for the Strabag consortium includes the construction of a 50 km dual carriageway motorway with two or three lanes in each direction as well as 50 km of spurs and connecting routes to the existing road network. The contract also comprises 50 cut-and-cover tunnels as well as two bored tunnels including the technical facilities, bridges and an approximately 80 km bicycle trail.

The new motorway in the heart of Lombardy's economic zone – the new section between A9 motorway and A4 motorway – will connect the city of Bergamo in northern Italy with Milan's Malpensa Airport, strengthening northern Italy's East-West link, relieving the local roads in the north of Milan and providing a boost to the local industry.

Strabag AG and its 100 % Italian subsidiary Strabag S.p.A hold 60 % of the consortium, the Italian companies Grandi Lavori Fincosit 26 % and Impresa Costruzioni Giuseppe Maltauro 14 %.
