New stadium with diamond-shaped mesh

The new stadium gives an impression of elegance and clarity. The outer shell with ROMBO mesh supported by the solid steel beams of the outer facade allows an unobstructed view: from the outside looking into the arena and from the inside looking out onto the unique mountain landscape. The outer facade of the Thun Arena was fitted with ROMBO mesh designed by the Romanshorn-based company Geobrugg. The diamond-shaped mesh, which is manufactured from high-tensile steel wire and has a mesh width of 65 mm, also protects against falls. With the sections of mesh facade being 7.50 m high and up to 140 m long, static considerations meant that a special solution was required for the holding and clamping devices.

The outer mesh facade thus allows an uninterrupted view of the mountains and gives visitors an impression of airy lightness. This can also be seen from the images on the live webcam, which films through the mesh and nevertheless guarantees a good view of the pitch. With the five square kilometers of mesh giving the stadium a simple yet modern touch, the Thun Arena is already being described as a model sports venue and the jewel in the crown of the Swiss Super League.

Generally speaking, opposing groups of fans interact with each other by throwing beer bottles and other objects, meaning that the mood on the terraces quickly becomes heated and aggressive. To pacify potentially violent fans and reduce the risk of trouble, the stadium's ROMBO mesh was also installed in the upper area of the stands. There is now hardly any space to throw objects between the meshes and, with a strength of at least 1,770 N/mm2, the mesh will also stand up to the attacks of violent hooligans. This leaves the stadium operators free to welcome large groups of fans without too many worries – after all, the emotions shared by those watching the action are as much a part of soccer as the emotions felt by the players on the pitch.
