Topping-out ceremony for shopping center on Zentralplatz square

The shell construction for the shopping center Forum Mittelrhein in Koblenz has been completed: accompanied by the Lord Mayor Prof. Dr. Joachim Hofmann-Göttig and further city representatives, the project partners ECE, Strabag Real Estate and RREEF Investment celebrated together with the builders the topping out of the new downtown shopping gallery on the Zentralplatz square on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.The shopping center with around 20,000 sqm of sales area and approx. 750 parking spaces is to open in fall 2012. On three sales levels will house 80 to 90 specialist stores, cafés, restaurants and service businesses. The investment volume for the shopping center amounts to around 145 million euros. The long-term management of the center in which around 600 new jobs will be created lies in the hands of ECE. The shopping center has already been awarded with the Pre-Certificate in Gold by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) for its ecological and energysaving master concept.

Next to the shopping center is a five-storey cultural building with a usable area of approx. 12,000 sqm being constructed on the Zentralplatz square – among others for the Mittelrhein Museum, the city library, and a tourism center for the Middle Rhine Valley world heritage. The cultural building is to open in 2013. Rounded off is the new urban ensemble with an approx. 6, 000 sqm large piazza between the shopping center and the cultural building. The design for the Forum Mittelrhein was created by the architects Benthem Crouwel from Aachen, who won the architectural competition in 2008. Ed. Züblin AG was commissioned as general contractor with the execution of the construction works.
