WeatherBoards fiber cement siding for Expo Zero Energy Home

CertainTeed is helping to drive green building education in Columbus, Ohio, through the sponsorship of WeatherBoards fiber cement siding to the Ohio State Expo Zero Energy House. The structure, which is seeking Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED ) Platinum certification, is located at the Ohio Expo Center and State Fair and will serve as a training facility for sustainable building design. During the fair, which ran through August 8, the home was open to more than 800,000 attendees, and will continue to serve on an on-going basis as an educational tool for architects, builders, contractors, students and other interested parties.

"CertainTeed is pleased to be supporting the Ohio State Expo Zero Energy House and the awareness it brings to consumers and trade professionals regarding green building practices," says Phyllis Vail, director of marketing communications for CertainTeed Siding Products Group. "The use of WeatherBoards is a perfect complement to the sustainable integrity of the home based on the siding's environmentally friendly formula and high recycled content."

The home was built by Green Tech of Ohio, LLC, a Columbus-based builder who specializes in compressed earth block construction. The construction process consists of compressing environmentally friendly materials such as clay, sand and soil into blocks that are installed using traditional masonry practices. The Ohio State Expo Zero Energy Home also includes solar electric, an organic garden, a water catchment system including stored water and rain barrels, and will have solar thermal and a vertical axis wind turbine.

"We chose CertainTeed WeatherBoards Cedar Lap Siding for this project because it's an excellent, long-lasting product that we can be confident wouldn't rot or decay," said Paul Bukky, owner of Green Tech of Ohio, LLC. "We wanted the highest-quality product, and we found that with CertainTeed."

Unlike wood, WeatherBoards is noncombustible, impact-resistant, impervious to wood-boring insects, resistant to UV rays and will not rot. Backed by a 50-year limited transferable warranty, WeatherBoards can contribute to LEED certification and NAHB Green Building Standards for recycled content and regional availability.
