Project proposal for Fehmarn tunnel released

Femern A/S has published the two project proposals for a fixed link between Denmark and Germany across the Fehmarnbelt. The tunnel construction cost estimate has gone down by 3.7 billion DKK compared to the feasibility study from 1999 and is now competitive compared to the bridge solution.

Over the past 18 months, two consultant consortiums have worked on project proposals for a cable-stayed bridge and an immersed tunnel solution respectively. The Ramboll, Arup and TEC consortium has designed the tunnel solution. At the earliest in January it is to be decided which of the proposals will be selected.

The total length of the tunnel will be 18.1 km. Travelling at the speed of 110 km/h it will take approximately 10 minutes to cross the tunnel motorway. Travel time by train will be 7 minutes from coast to coast.

Ramboll (Denmark), Arup (UK) and TEC, Tunnel Engineering Consultants (The Netherlands) have entered into a joint venture to design the tunnel project for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link under the authority of Femern A/S. The latter is responsible for the designing and planning of a fixed link between Denmark and Germany across the Fehmarnbelt. The Ramboll- Arup-TEC joint venture has amongst others been selected on the basis of their vast experience with similar tunnel crossings. A tunnel crossing of the Fehmarnbelt will be one of the deepest and by far the longest immersed tunnel in the world.
