Mott MacDonald to carry out ESIA study in Mozambique

Mott MacDonald's role on Phase 1 of the Mozambique Regional Transmission Project is due to reach fruition. The consultancy was appointed by Electricidade de Moçambique with World Bank funding to undertake an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) for a transmission line project.

Mozambique is in possession of abundant natural power resources such as fossil fuels, natural gas and coal reserves. In order to develop some of these resources for export and domestic electricity consumption, the Government of Mozambique has launched major infrastructure initiatives involving the development of generation projects and an extra high voltage transmission system for the transfer of power to neighbouring countries as well as meeting Mozambique's domestic and industrial consumption needs.

The project, known as the CESUL transmission line project, is the combination of a 800kV high voltage and a 400kV high voltage overhead electrical transmission lines. The total proposed capacity of both lines will be 3100MW during normal operation. The project will also include the expansion of existing substations in Maputo and Matambo, the construction of up to five new substations along the line and new access roads, the upgrade of existing roads to support the construction and ongoing maintenance and operation of the overhead lines.
