Arcadis to assist California on water management issues

Netherlands-based Arcadis, an international consultancy, design and engineering company, announced that it has signed a contract to serve as the Independent Consultant to the Delta Stewardship Council of the State of California for which it will work on water management issues and wetland restoration projects. This is a key water management assignment for Arcadis in the region, building on its extensive expertise in this field. Work on the contract will start immediately. NewFields and Deltares are sub-consultants to Arcadis for this contract.

The Delta Stewardship Council is a new state agency charged with the development of a new Delta Plan for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in California. This Delta, situated 80 km east of San Francisco, is a source of drinking water for 25 million people and a large part of California's agricultural industry. Its ecosystem has been heavily altered and it suffers from fragile levees, land subsidence, sea level rise and water quality decline.

Arcadis will advise the Council on the development and content of the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) and its possible incorporation into the larger Delta Plan that is currently in development. BDCP is a separate program that is studying various water conveyance and wetland restoration alternatives to provide a more reliable water supply to arid Southern California and to restore the fragile ecosystem of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Among the alternatives being studied are various configurations of a 65 km long canal or tunnel and different locations for 30.000 hectares of wetland restoration. Total construction cost for the various alternatives is currently estimated at $8 to $15 billion.
