Arcadis wins contract for remediation of Dutch asbestos roads

Netherlands-based Arcadis, the international design, consulting, engineering and management services company, has won a large contract for providing environmental and project supervision services for the remediation of asbestos roads near the towns of Goor and Harderwijk in the Netherlands. In two years time more than one thousand locations will be remediated. The project is financed by the Dutch Ministry for Housing, Planning and the Environment and executed by DLG, a department of the Ministry of Agriculture. It is the third phase of this project of which ARCADIS in phase two also performed similar activities for 450 sites. The contract size is almost EUR 10 million.

The Netherlands used to have two large asbestos factories: Eternit in Goor and Asbestona in Harderwijk. Around these factories, asbestos waste was used as a surface hardener for dirt roads and farm courtyards. Since 1980 it became clear that asbestos might be harmful. Later it was proven that inhalation of asbestos fibers can strongly increase the risk for specific types of cancer. To take away the health risks from asbestos roads, the Ministry for Housing, Planning and Environment then started the asbestos road remediation program.
