Leighton wins project in Mongolia

Leighton Asia, a participating interest of the Hochtief subsidiary Leighton, is to expand its coal mining activities at the Ukhaa Khudag Mine and thereby increase the production rate by 50 percent by 2013. The company has been working there since 2009 and will receive approximately EUR 486 million (A$ 700 million) for the additional services.

The mine is the site of one of the most important raw materials deposits in Mongolia. Leighton Asia began mining there in early 2009 with an annual production rate of initially 2.5 million tonnes of coal, before securing contract adjustments for a further 5 and 10 million tonnes. Annual production will now be ramped up to 15 million tonnes. Moreover, since November 2009, the company has been building a 225-kilometer railway line through the Gobi Desert for the transportation of coal. All the orders now have a combined total value of around EUR 1.64 billion.
