ABB wins power equipment order in Italy

Zurich-based ABB will provide TERNA SpA high voltage power equipment for the Piossasco substation to be located in Turin, Italy worth $34 million. The order was booked in the second quarter.

ABB is supplying a range of innovative switching technologies, including space-saving indoor gas insulated switchgear, rated at 420 kV (kilovolts) and 245kV, and easy-to-install hybrid outdoor switchgear rated at 145 kV. ABB will also provide the substation's indoor surveillance and monitoring system.

ABB is a pioneer in GIS (technology, which can reduce space requirements by more than 70 percent compared to conventional AIS (air-insulated switchgear). Because of its compact size, GIS is easier to install in cities and other locations where space is limited. Its robust design enhances system reliability and efficiency, and ensures continued operation in harsh environments with minimal maintenance needs.

ABB offers a range of high-voltage products up to 1,100 kilovolts (kV) including air and gas insulated switchgear, hybrid solutions, instrument transformers, power capacitors and surge arresters that help enhance the reliability, efficiency and quality of power with minimal impact on the environment.

Terna is Italy's primary high-voltage electricity transmission grid owner and operator, and is responsible for an energy network that includes more than 62,000 kilometers of lines.
