Acciona´s plan comes into effect

Acciona is a pioneer in setting its air conditioning temperature to 23-24ºC during summertime working hours and allowing employees to dress more casually to make them feel more comfortable. This initiative is part of the Company's Environmental Efficiency Plan 2008-2011.

Acciona will launch tomorrow its "Energy Savings, Casual Attire and Sustainability Plan". Air conditioning temperature will be set one or two degrees Centigrade above the usual levels for summertime (21-22ºC) and employees are encouraged to come into work dressed more casually to help them feel more comfortable in the workplace. This year the campaign will run from June 21 through September 3.

At this time of the year, air conditioning at Acciona premises is set at 23ºC - 24ºC and a more informal dress code is introduced. Staff are encouraged to leave ties, suits and long sleeves at home - unless circumstances require otherwise - helping them to feel more comfortable in the office.

Last year the campaign helped to achieve average savings across the Company of 8.6 % of air conditioning electricity consumption, equivalent to 5.2 % of total electricity consumption. At corporate headquarters in Madrid alone, the measures contributed 57,500kWh-worth of energy savings, and avoided the emission into the atmosphere of 17.3 metric tons of CO2.

Apart from achieving energy savings, this initiative helps to raise awareness of the Company's sustainability values among staff and to get them involved personally.

The "Energy Savings, Casual Attire and Sustainability Plan", one of Acciona's many pioneering initiatives, falls within the Company's Environmental Efficiency for Offices Plan aimed at enhancing Acciona's overall interaction with the environment through three main courses of action: energy efficiency, efficient use of water, and reducing waste generated.

As a result of these efforts, in 2009 Acciona helped achieve a 13% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to 2008, while Acciona products and services avoided the emission into the atmosphere of 8.7 million metric tons of CO2, up 27% on 2008.
