Thiess awarded South Walker Creek Mine contract extension

Australian infrastructure firm Thiess will continue coal mining operations at the South Walker Creek Mine in Queensland, following a three year $229m contract extension by the mine's owner BHP Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BMC) it was announced.

South Walker Creek Mine is located approximately 40km west of Nebo, in the state's coal rich Bowen Basin. The mine produces both PCI and thermal product coal for export.

Thiess constructed and began operating the South Walker Creek Mine in 1996. The contract for the removal of overburden, coal processing, and train loading was extended in 2000 with subsequent extensions in June 2003 and in July 2007. The new contract focuses on overburden and coal mining.
