Mott MacDonald appointed on Freezone Sohar

Mott MacDonald has been appointed by Sohar Industrial Port Company to provide design and engineering services for Phase 1 of a multi million dollar development of a freezone in Sohar, Oman.

Freezone Sohar is being developed by Sohar Freezone LLC, a joint venture between the Government of Oman, Port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands), and SKIL Infrastructure Limited (India). Situated alongside Oman's Port of Sohar, the freezone is being introduced to attract downstream investments that will add value to base industries already using the port such as petrochemicals and metals. A proposed network of dedicated operational corridors will allow for the easy movement of containerised traffic, petrochemicals, and other products. To attract investment, the authority has drawn up a range of fiscal incentives that will form the basis of an attractive set of new regulations and underpin Sohar Freezone Law.

Mott MacDonald has been appointed to provide detailed master planning, a geotechnical investigation as well as detailed design services for the roads and related infrastructure for the first phase of the project. This first phase will be hosted on a 500 hectare plot within the 4500 hectare freezone site and construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2010.
