Allan Cook becomes chairman of Semta

Allan Cook CBE, chairman of Atkins, the UK's largest engineering and design consultancy, is to be appointed chairman of employer-led Sector Skills Council Semta. He will take over from Sir Alan Jones of Toyota who has been in position since 2006.

Allan Cook is a chartered engineer with more than 30 years' international experience in the automotive, aerospace and defence industries. Prior to Atkins, he was chief executive of Cobham PLC and has previously held senior positions with GEC-Marconi, BAE Systems and Hughes Electronics. He was awarded a CBE in 2008.

Semta is the employer-led skills council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies in the UK, representing sectors including aerospace, automotive, mechanical engineering, electronics, marine technologies and science. Its role is to raise skills levels and competitiveness in the 76,000 companies and two million-strong workforce that make up these sectors. Its National Skills Academy for Manufacturing delivers an independent national standard for manufacturing training content, delivery and process by focusing on business return, and has seen an average ratio of 6:1 return on investment.
