Vinci Construction France to work on the Bordeaux vertical lift bridge

The Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux has signed the notice to proceed officially awarding the design and construction of the Bordeaux vertical lift bridge to Vinci Construction France, the lead company of the design-build consortium.

The bridge will link the Bacalan and Bastide districts on the left and right banks respectively. It is designed as an urban boulevard, crossing the Garonne 2 km downstream of the city centre. It will accommodate a variety of urban transport modes, with a dual two-lane carriageway for light vehicles and local HGV traffic, a two-lane exclusive right of way for public transport, bicycle paths and pedestrian walkways.

The bridge will be 45 metres wide and 433 metres long. Its 117 metre central span, weighing 3, 500 tonnes, will be raised between four 80 metre high towers to provide a 106 metre wide shipping channel with a 53 metre clearance. The bridge will be handed over at the end of 2012. The total value of the project is €125 million.
