Ramboll to design Climate House

Danish engineering group Ramboll has been commissioned to design a laboratory facility for testing the performance of full-scale building elements, as part of Bergen University College's research on sustainable building methods. In addition to being a laboratory, the facility, which is generally referred to as "the Climate House", will be used as a public showroom for the sustainable technical solutions that are already available in the market today.

The laboratory's research objective is primarily to test how different building concepts perform in different climatic conditions, but the facility will also be a testbed for different small-scale solar and wind energy systems. The building is designed with attention to how visitors can physically experience the relation between the building's energy consumption and the external climatic forces that affect the building.

The building's design concept is to be a framework for both physical components and human activity. Despite its modest size, the building will be situated on a very well exposed site (on the top of an existing building!) and will be an important reference project when it comes to sustainable building expertise.

To achieve the goal of creating a highly flexible building structure as well as making the building as energy saving as possible, a close collaboration between the different consultants has been very important. The use of Open BIM as a work method was essential to achieve this goal. The project has been selected as a Ramboll pilot project within BuildingSMART and is included in Ramboll in Norway's program for increasing the expertise in this area.

The Climate House building process is scheduled to start in spring 2010.
