Italy's Impregilo to widen the Panama Canal

Italian builder Impregilo SpA said that the Panama Canal Authority and the "Grupo Unido por el Canal" consortium formed by Impregilo, Sacyr Vallehermoso (Spain) and Somague (Portugal), Jan de Nul (Belgium), Constructora Urbana (Panama) had signed the contract awarding the project for construction of a new system of locks under plans to widen the Canal.

The Impregilo consortium was officially informed that it had been awarded the tender on July 15 after the Canal Authority accepted its bid of 3.22 billion dollars (including the provisional sum).

Construction work will be completed by the end of 2014, the centenary year of the opening of the Panama Canal.
