First Paroc print panel project in Finland

The first PAROC print façade panels, manufactured in Parainen, will be delivered to an extension of Cygnaeus school, which is under construction. The school ordered by the city of Jyväskylä will function as substitute premises during renovation of schools and possibly also during renovation of nursery schools. Paroc Panel System launched the new Paroc print panel in April 2009. Most towns have suffered from mould problems in schools already for many years. As substitute schools have traditionally functioned temporary module buildings, which have been built on a quick schedule in different parts of Finland. Module buildings were also included in the competitive bidding of Cygnaeus substitute school. However, the school building planned to be made of panels, was the winner. This solution was, in addition to competitive price also e.g. concerning energy efficiency as well as heating, plumbing and ventilation engineering, better than barracks.

Cygnaeus school is situated close to the Jyväskylä city centre and it's therefore of great significance for the town image. Facades were also originally planned to be realized using Paroc panels, but introducing the new Paroc print panels into the market created entirely new possibilities. When planning the patterns the aim was to achieve restrained appearance and at the same time to give information about the use of building. Texture formed of letters has been used as a basic pattern. Uniform ornamental pattern covers the southern gable of the building. On the eastern façade large separate letters have been designed, which are formed of the same texture when looking close up.

The criteria for all structural and material selections were a quick construction schedule and modifiability of premises. Demolition of the old building was started week 15 and first pupils will move to the school week 42. Only the foundation, concrete frame and roof of the old building were left standing. The old structures were carefully disinfected in order to avoid risk of mould. Construction work has been started in the shelter of the old roof, e.g. terrazzo concrete surfaces will be completed before installing the external walls.
