Controllable solar shading product

More than 800 exhibitors displayed products and services at this year's AIA Convention in San Francisco, but it was a particularly special event for Construction Specialties, Inc. Showcasing its latest development, called Solarmotion, Construction Specialties added controllable solar shading systems to its already impressive line of specialty architectural products. Solarmotion sunshades are designed to automatically move with the sun to reduce solar heat gain and glare, lower energy consumption and maximize daylight in buildings.

Many factors led to Construction Specialties' decision to enter the controllable shading market. One of those factors was the USGBC LEED Green Building Rating System. Along with other initiatives like Architecture 2030, LEED considers the use of controllable solar shading systems an effective way of reducing solar heat gains. As outlined by the USGBC's LEED for New Construction "Automated Moveable Shading Devices" are an effective way of reducing energy consumption. Solarmotion, in its many forms and configurations, meets this requirement.

USGBC also refers to how "Daylight and Views" can be compromised when reducing solar heat gains. The customizable control strategies behind Solarmotion, especially when combined with Construction Specialties lightshelves, allow for an optimal daylight management strategy. That is, allowing natural light to enter a building, while minimizing the solar heat gain which can have negative effects on worker productivity and, of course, energy consumption.

Solarmotion was developed to meet these functional needs while at the same time providing the architect with an extensive range of design options. As displayed at the AIA Convention, Solarmotion's louver blades can be designed using aluminum, cedar wood, perforated metal, glass or other materials. Additional color and size options further increase the range of visual possibilities.
