Corus captures two major projects in New Zealand

Corus International has proved ComFlor 80 - an innovative composite floor profile that offers the ultimate in lightweight steel decking for all multi-rise buildings - to be the material of choice for two prestigious construction projects in New Zealand – Christchurch's 23-storey C1 Tower and the luxury Bellagio Apartments in Wellington. Standing at 86 metres, the C1 Tower will dominate the skyline as the South Island's tallest building. Due for completion in 2009, the 23-storey building will provide 171 hotel rooms, 15 luxury apartments plus a penthouse office suite and extensive parking. To date more than 9,600 square metres of Corus' ComFlor 80 has been installed over 23-storeys at a rate of four days per floor by John Jones Steel Ltd.

Frank Van Schaijik, Managing Director comments: "Specified as a structural alternative to concrete ComFlor 80 makes for smarter, faster construction. It doesn't need temporary propping and can be man-handled into position for stud welding very quickly – facilitating speed of construction to create significant programme savings in context of both time and money."

ComFlor 80, developed by Corus Panels and Profiles, is manufactured from high grade 450 steel and tested for both composite action and fire resistance for full slab assembly to ensure it meets all international standards. The ultimate in lightweight steel decking, Comflor's long span capabilities means that less structural steel is required when it comes to realising the architectural vision – enabling clients to make significant savings in the overall construction cost.

The benefits of Comflor 80 have also been recognised in the delivery of the 11-storey Bellagio apartment scheme on the North Island. Located between two existing buildings on the busy Taranaki Street, the site footprint presented limited space to utilise for laydown. Manufactured off-site, deliveries of 5,500 square metres of Comflor 80 were carefully timed using just-in-time logistics – helping reduce the number of trades on site at any one time and limit disruption in the local area.

Steve Stickland, Product Manager at ComFlor Building Systems, adds: "At Corus International, we pride ourselves on being able to offer a comprehensive supply chain management service including logistical, financial and technical support relating to steel and associated products and services. We have already had considerable success in Australasia to date but think as a market it offers a wealth of opportunities in which we can further expand."
