Shanghai Aquatic Sports Center, China

On 30 December 2008 the Groundbreaking Ceremony took place in presence of the deputy mayor of Shanghai. As host to the 14th FINA World Championship in 2011, the city of Shanghai invited international bids for the design of a competition venue commensurate with the international standing of the city, to incorporate a swimming stadium, sports stadium and outdoor swimming pool for high-diving competitions. As part of a permanent improvement of the city, former industrial brownfield sites along the HuangPu river are being redeveloped. Like the World Fair 2010 site, the SASC is another important element in this local structural development. The reference to water and the later use of the sports facilities by Shanghai residents are aspects to be taken into account in the design. Two significant formal elements distinguish the design: large water area at the heart of the site will connect all the buildings together, giving the site a park-like character. Secondly, design affinities and a common formal idiom and use of materials will lend all the buildings structural homogeneity.
