Seewinkeltherme, Austria. Structural work in record time

The Austrian Seewinkel hot springs resort complete with four-star hotel is currently one of the largest reinforced concrete construction projects in the Alpine Republic with a total investment in the region of 80 million euros. The HABAU group of companies were commissioned to construct the concrete frame and in so doing have succeeded in meeting two difficult challenges. On the one hand, the special form of the spiral-shaped building with mostly circular structures place high demands on the site personnel as well as the formwork technology itself. On the other, the building shell is to be completely finished in only nine months. Altogether seven tower cranes and a construction crew of more than 100 are therefore working simultaneously in order to meet the deadline. An optimal work preparation phase, tailored to the exact needs of the project, was based on efficient PERI formwork and scaffolding technology which ensures that both material requirements and the tight scheduling needed to carry out the in-situ concreting remain fully manageable at all times.

Slab thicknesses up to 55 centimetres, five-metre ceiling heights as well as circular layouts - the PERI SKYDECK panel slab formwork is the most economical solution also with these difficult boundary conditions. Due to the systematic assembly sequence and effortless working with the lightweight system components, fast shuttering times can be achieved. In addition, compensations and adjustments can be carried out with SKYDECK and its system components.

The SKYDECK drophead system clearly accelerates the materials handling and reduces on-site material requirements as striking can already take place after only one day. This means panels and main beams are immediately freed up for the next section - only the slab props with dropheads and cover strips remain in position as temporary support.

In addition to the support height, the bearing capacity, flexibility along with the time required for assembly determine the selection of the most suitable load-bearing system. Lightweight PEP slab props made of steel and MULTIPROP aluminium props as part of the slab formwork provide the HABAU construction team both weight and application advantages with every use. This is particularly noticeable during striking if working without crane support. The MULTIPROP MP 480 weighs only 25 kilograms and has an extension range of 2.60 to 4.80 metres. The propīs area of application can be increased through the quickly-mounted Base MP 50 with an additional 50 cm.

In the area of the building core, PERI UP modular scaffold - in part combined with HD 200 heavy-duty props - forms an appropriate load-bearing system for construction of the up to seven-metre high wall sections at heights of ten to sixteen metres. PERI UP shoring towers are type tested which makes complex static calculations a thing of the past. 40 kN per leg can be safely transferred up to a height of 22 metres. Furthermore, the modular structure and metric grid arrangement of the PERI UP modular scaffold system make it possible to optimally adapt the supporting structure to the forces. Thus, several standards can be bundled together using short 25-centimetre long ledgers for load concentrations. This results in the possibility of almost any increase in the individual load-bearing capacities with system parts without any need for time-consuming mounting of scaffold tubes and couplers. In addition, with the help of PERI UP, construction crews are able to deal with a range of scaffolding tasks with only one system: as crane-movable reinforcing scaffold units for forming the high walls and as scaffold stair towers which provide access to the higher-positioned working areas.

The circular, 40-centimetre thick reinforced concrete core walls are being polygonally formed using TRIO panel formwork elements and trapezoidal-shaped filler timbers - a time-saving solution for respective radii specifications. Connecting the TRIO 120 elements is a simple process with the BFD alignment coupler, the only connecting part required for all panel joints.

In the true sense of the meaning, the comprehensive PERI formwork and scaffolding solution is rounded off with the continuously-adjustable RUNDFLEX circular formwork for extremely accurate construction of the swimming pool edges. The rentable formwork elements can be adjusted on-site to suit the wide range of continuously changing radii. A particular advantage is the fact that the circular and panel formwork systems used can be combined at any time with the BFD alignment coupler. This means wall junctions and obstructions can be easily formed with help of TRIO articulated corners and without any additional work.

As the easternmost federal state of Austria, Burgenland is geographically located between Hungary, Slovakia and Slovenia. The Neusiedler Lake, a famous tourist attraction of this region, continues to add to its attractiveness with the construction of this extraordinary thermal bath complex. From 2010 onwards, guests can take advantage of the leisure and recreational facilities throughout the year.
