Acciona dedicates world's largest wind farm

Acciona Energy and North Dakota Governor John Hoeven officially dedicated Acciona's Tatanka Wind Farm. The 180 MW wind farm, installed in North Dakota and South Dakota, is the biggest built by the company in the world and the first installed using its own wind turbine technology in the U.S. Wind conditions in the Tatanka region are optimal for wind energy generation; however, the size of the Tatanka Wind Farm is limited by regional transmission capacity. Speakers at the dedication event expressed hope that the current national energy policy debates will result in improved transmission capabilities across the United States, allowing Tatanka's full wind energy potential to be realized with further expansion.

The Tatanka Wind Farm is the first installation of Acciona's 1.5 MW turbines in the United States. Construction of the $381 million project began in 2007 and went online this year. Acciona's Tatanka Wind Farm is comprised of 120 wind turbines. Fifty-nine turbines are located in McPherson County South Dakota and sixty-one turbines are located in Dickey and McIntosh Counties North Dakota. It generates enough clean energy to power more than 60,000 U.S. homes.

Electricity generated at Acciona's Tatanka Wind Farm is sold into the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator (MISO) and delivered to homes in a very large region of the upper mid-western United States and Canada.
