First solar powered self storage facility in North Carolina

The first of its kind, green self storage facility in North Carolina has begun generating its electrical needs using solar photovoltaic panels. The 10 kilowatt, 20 foot pole mounted system is located at Security Self Storage on 3600 Tryon Rd. Raleigh, NC. Working with NC Green Power, an independent nonprofit organization supported by NC utilities, and Bob McGuffey, Deputy Director of Operations at the North Carolina Solar Center, Security Self Storage designed the largest "feed back" solar photovoltaic system installed on Progress Energy's grid to date. While producing clean renewable solar electricity, the system will also avoid an estimated 25,000 lbs of carbon dioxide, 75 lbs of sulfur dioxide and 30 lbs of nitrogen dioxide as well as mercury emissions each year.

Following in the footsteps of national businesses like Whole Foods and Toyota, Security Self Storage is addressing consumer's growing demand for eco-friendly services. While manufactured products such as hybrid cars are now becoming common, some service businesses with no obvious connection to the environment are also at the forefront of the "green movement". Security Self Storage, a locally owned storage company with seven locations throughout the Triangle is passionate about alternative energy, and they wanted to use the sunny space of their self storage facilities to generate green power. "We are excited about being the first green self storage facility in North Carolina. We hope the prominent solar towers will encourage more renewable energy projects in the Triangle and encourage others to reduce their environmental footprint." said Dr. Michael Chancellor, Board Member.

Kurt Regensburger, President of Security Self Storage said, "We hope to combine our commitment to protecting the local environment with the operation of a successful self storage business using our store-green.org initiative. This new concept not only harnesses solar energy, but also encompasses other eco-friendly practices such as well designed climate controlled buildings with insulated garage doors, low wattage lighting, free box recycling, wetland conservation, aerodynamic rental trucks and on-site rain water retention. Our motto is "Store Green, Feel Great with Security Self Storage."
