Official delegation visits Amareleja (Moura) photovoltaic plant

The Portuguese Minister of Economy and Innovation, Manuel Pinho, and US Energy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman visited the site of the biggest photovoltaic solar plant in the world, which Acciona is constructing at Amareleja (Moura). The 46 MWp facility represents an investment of around 240 million euros. So far 66% has been completed and full grid connection is expected at the end of this year. The plant will produce 90 million kWh a year, equivalent to the consumption of 30,000 Portuguese homes, and will avoid the emission of 86,500 tons per annum of CO2 from coal-fired power stations.

To date 30.41 MWp have been installed (66% of total planned capacity), and installation work will continue through the summer. The facility, which is already sending electricity to the grid from the 3.18 MW operational at the end of 2007, will probably become fully grid connected at the end of this year.

The Amareleja (Moura) photovoltaic plant is wholly owned by Acciona, which acquired the stocks of the owner of the installation rights (Amper Solar) in September 2006.
