Ramboll designs largest hospital in Northern Europe

Danish Ramboll is part of the winning consortium to design and lead the construction of the largest hospital project in Northern Europe – the New University Hospital in Aarhus which will be built as an extension of the existing Aarhus University Hospital in Skejby. The project will stretch over the next 10-15 years and the hospital will be the size of a Danish provincial town and is also to become the largest workplace in the city of Aarhus. The large hospital area will be organised like a town, with neighbourhoods, streets and squares providing the basis for a diverse, dynamic and green urban area.

The hospital town will have a total of 500,000 m² of which 250,000 m² will be new property. The complex will be divided into seven professional communities each with their own specialist services. The hospital town will consist of three key elements: a two-storey building with treatment departments and upon this another four stories containing beds. Also there will be a 'Forum' which is the central arrival area where the public functions will be located. Furthermore three high-rise buildings will house the administrations department, research facilities and a patient hotel. On the ground floor will be the main reception area and more public facilities such as a conference hall, shops, bank, cinema etc.

The winning consultancy team, the DNU consortium consists of: Ramboll, C.F. Møller Architects, Cubo Architects, Avanti Architects (UK), Schønherr Landskab, Tegnestuen Havestuen, Birch & Krogboe, Søren Jensen Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma, Nosyko (N), Lohfert & Lohfert and Capgemini Denmark.
