Thorn to illuminate Palestinian West Bank sites

The UK-based lighting company Thorn, a brand of the Zumtobel Group of Austria, is to illuminate heritage sites in the City of Jericho on the Palestinian West Bank. The project is one outcome of an initiative launched by The Lighting Urban Community International Association (LUCI), an international network of over 70 municipalities, universities, lighting designers and industrial companies, to contribute to the development of disadvantaged communities or regions through outdoor lighting. The three project partners, the City of Jericho, Thorn and the City of Lyon as partner community, joined forces with the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism to select three heritage sites that will soon be brought to light after nightfall, adding to their appeal as tourist attractions and generating tangible benefits for the local community.

The three sites are the giant sycamore tree of Zacchaeus, which is over 2000 years old; the ruins of Hisham's Palace (724-743 AD) with the magnificent Tree of Life mosaic; and the Mount of Temptation, the site of an Orthodox monastery dating back to the 6th century AD.

The project partners have already drawn up preliminary lighting concepts. Once the lighting experts from the two municipal authorities and Thorn have finalised the details, Thorn should be able to supply and aim the equipment in the late spring of 2008.
