Leighton secures further mining contract

German construction giant Hochtief announced that its Australian subsidiary, Leighton Holdings Limited, is to go on producing iron ore at the Yandi mine in Western Australia for a further three years. Leighton's subsidiary HWE Mining has just signed a contract to this effect with mine owner BHP Billiton. The contract extension, with a value of around EUR 365 million, entails the provision of complete mining services at Yandi in the period up to August 2012, with an option for BHP Billiton to extend the contract for another two years after that. This new agreement follows the decision in June 2007 to award HWE Mining a two-year contract extension worth EUR 243 million to operate the mine up to July 2009.
